Licensed preventive vaccines against various infectious diseases have been designed as (1) attenuated pathogens (e.g., chickenpox, mumps-measles-rubella, yellow fever, shingles [varicella-zoster], and rotavirus), (2) inactivated pathogens (e.g., diphtheria-pertussis-tetanus, trivalent influenza, Japanese encephalitis, meningococcal vaccine, typhoid fever, poliomyelitis, and hepatitis A), and (3) recombinant proteins (e.g., hepatitis B, type B Hemophilus influenzae, pneumococcal vaccine, and HPV prophylactic vaccines).
